The community is invited to the Third Annual Writing Conference on Friday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College, the conference is free and open to the public but registration is required at www.NOVAMAwritingconference2017.eventbrite.com.
Katie Clare will lead the first session from 10 a.m. to noon. Called “Writing in Times of Pain, Anxiety and Stress,” the session will explain how writing can help people overcome stress and lead to a more peaceful, powerful and healthy life. Clare holds a master’s degree in creative writing and is currently pursuing a doctorate in writing and rhetoric with a research emphasis in mindfulness, well-being and contemplative pedagogies.
From 1 to 3 p.m., Cheryl Miehl will conduct “Visual Art Journaling,” a hands-on workshop combining art with words. Participants will experiment with graphite, colored pencil, paint, collage and printmaking techniques to learn the basic skills needed to create visual art journals. No previous artistic experience is required. Miehl holds a master’s degree in mixed media painting and bookmaking and is actively involved in the Virginia Art Education Association.
Lunch will be provided for attendees.
