Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a video on social media today featuring Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) signing his cosponsor form for the District of Columbia statehood bill (H.R. 51) and discussing the importance of statehood. Norton also thanked Hoyer for his Washington Post op-ed endorsing D.C. statehood last week, where he also announced he would cosponsor the bill.
.@LeaderHoyer has officially become a cosponsor of our #DCstatehood bill (HR 51)! No Member fought harder to pass our bill granting DC a House vote in 2007-2010. With Steny’s leadership, we look forward to going to the House floor after our hearing on July 24 and markup. pic.twitter.com/0OLagRer25

“Majority Leader Hoyer, my regional partner, has always been a good friend of the District,” Norton said. “No Member worked more closely with me or fought harder to pass our bill granting D.C. a House vote, which would have been successful but for the National Rifle Association amendment eliminating all D.C. gun safety laws. The Majority Leader sets the House floor schedule, and we will be leaning on his leadership to bring H.R. 51 to the House floor once a hearing and a markup have been held in the House Oversight and Reform Committee.”
“D.C. residents have no stronger champion than Congresswoman Norton,” Hoyer said. “I have long joined Congresswoman Norton in advocating for voting rights for District residents, who deserve to have their voices heard in every level of our government. I am proud to cosponsor her statehood bill, and I look forward to bringing it to the House Floor for a vote.”
