One person was killed in an early-morning tractor-trailer crash on the Beltway, Virginia State Police reported.
At 1:49 a.m. today, troopers responded to a crash in the southbound lanes of I-495 at Exit 49, the right-hand exit to I-66 west.
A tractor-trailer traveling south on I-495 ran off the right side of the interstate and the trailer struck the cement barrier, which ruptured the truck’s fuel tank. This caused the vehicle to catch fire and become engulfed in flames. The impact with the barrier wall also dislodged the vehicle’s axles, which ended up blocking several travel lanes.
The driver of the vehicle died at the scene. The remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Manassas for autopsy, examination and positive identification.
The crash remains under investigation.
