Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe won’t seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, he told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Wednesday night.

There had been speculation McAuliffe would jump into the race but he told Cuomo he wants to spend his time raising money for Democratic candidates in the Virginia General Assembly.

McAuliffe, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and longtime friend of the Clintons, had been rumored to be considering a run. Critics noted that could pose a problem for other white male centrists — most notably Joe Biden, if he decides to enter the race.
