News release from Arlington County:

ARLINGTON, Va. –St. Patrick’s Day can be a celebratory time, often including alcohol. The green beer and merry-making of the holiday unfortunately lead to dangerous driving conditions as party-goers head home. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, 59 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes over St. Paddy’s Day holiday weekend across the nation. And, more than one-third (37% of all motor vehicle crash fatalities involved drunk drivers. The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD), the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) and Responsbility.org are teaming up to remind that if your plans include drinking, plan ahead to take a sober ride home.

Celebrate responsibly this St. Patrick’s Day and take the time to educate yourself in advance on how alcohol and other factors impact your blood alcohol concentration (BAC), by using Responsibility.org’s Virtual Bar, available online and as an app on the Google Play and iTunes stores. The Virtual Bar uses the latest science to provide you with a sense of how long it would take for your BAC to return to 0.00 and how you may feel differently at various BAC levels, by evaluating what you’ve eaten, the water you drink and other important variables.

On Saturday, March 16 from 5-7 p.m., ACPD, WRAP and Responsibility.org will conduct the Don’t Press Your Luck anti-drunk driving event to highlight the effect alcohol has on motor skills. This free event is open to the public and will take place on N. Hudson Street at Wilson Boulevard.

The Arlington County Police Department will conduct the following road closures from approximately 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM to accommodate this event:

  • N. Hudson Street between Wilson Boulevard and 13th Street N.

Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary “No Parking” signs in the area. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, call 703-558-2222.
