Wintry mix Monday greets commuters, students

Slippery streets and late school openings are on tap for Monday morning, as forecasters predict a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain Sunday night into Monday morning.

Fairfax County Schools and most others in the region will open two hours late. Federal offices will also open two hours late.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for northern Virginia and Washington DC, and nearby areas.

There is a threat for wintry precipitation again later Monday into Tuesday. If the threats materialize, there may be travel
disruptions, forecasters warned. Isolated wind damage is possible Wednesday. Westerly winds may gust around 50 mph.

At 10 p.m. Sunday, icy conditions were being reported on roads in Fairfax County, Arlington and Alexandria.
