Thursday’s high winds are to blame for a fire in a Vienna building, according to Fairfax County Fire & Rescue.
The fire began shortly before 12:30 p.m. in a two-story commercial building in the 100 block of Church Street NE in Vienna.
Firefighters said smoke was visible at the rear of the building when they arrived and a second alarm was sounded. Strong winds and live electrical equipment complicated their efforts but firefighters brought the fire under control without injury.
Seven employees were inside the building when a passerby noticed smoke around the outside electrical meter and notified 9-1-1. All employees escaped before firefighters arrived.
Fire investigators determined the fire was caused when a large tree fell onto power lines servicing the building. This resulted in a power surge within the electrical panel located in the basement.
No one was displaced because of the fire. Damage was about $25,000.
