Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria schools, among others, will be closed Monday as roads remain treacherous [and a fresh band of snow moves into Northern Virginia, on top of the nine or so inches already on the ground. NOVA campuses will also be closed Monday. Fairfax County parks are closed.

There have been hundreds of accidents and police warn that roads that were wet but passable are becoming icy as the afternoon light begins to fade. What was wet will soon be icy, in other words.

In one of the most recent accidents, a sand truck overturned on North Kings Highway. There were no injuries.

VDOT is urging commuters to plan ahead for their Monday morning trek, as roads may be in worse shape tomorrow morning than they were this afternoon. If you must travel, expect delays. Use your headlights and completely clear snow from your car, including the roof.

Fire departments ask that you clear the snow from fire hydrants in your area so firefighters can find them quickly.
