Virginia State Police say an Occoquan man died in a plane crash in Spotsylvania County Friday morning.

Leonardo Ospina Villada had just taken off from Shannon Airport in a fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft when it was apparently caught by the wind. Witnesses said the plane banked to the left and crashed into the ground just outside the airport property. The victim was alone in the plane.

According to his Facebook page, Ospina Villada was a software engineer at Collins Aerospace and was a native of  Manizales, Antioquia, Colombia.

Ospina Villada was taken to Mary Washington Hospital where he died.  The FAA and NTSB are also investigating the crash.
