[UPDATED: 1:30 P.M., 1/1/2019]

A two-vehicle New Year’s Eve crash on the Fairfax County Parkway killed one person and injured three others. Killed was Melanie McKenna, 20, of Centreville.

Police said McKenna was driving a 1996 Toyota Corolla southbound on the Parkway when she failed to negotiate a bend in the road, and went off the roadway to the left. She overcorrected and lost control, sliding across the roadway and driving into oncoming northbound traffic lanes.

McKenna’s car collided with a 2015 Acura MDX.  McKenna died at the scene of the crash.  The driver of the 2015 Acura and two of McKenna’s passengers were taken to a local hospital.

The accident happened about 8:45 p.m. between Ox Road and Roberts Road. The parkway was closed in both directions while officers investigated.

Speed, alcohol and drugs were not factors for the driver of the Acura, but detectives are still working to determine if any were a factor for McKenna.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact the Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543.
