Driver killed when he exits car on the Beltway

UPDATED 2:20 p.m.: The fatally-injured driver was identified as Nathan L. Dickerson, 47, of Alexandria. He was hit by a red sedan that left the scene.

Virginia State Police are seeking the public’s help in investigating a fatal crash that occurred overnight at the Fairfax County/Alexandria line on I-495 near Exit 174 for Eisenhower Ave.

At approximately 1:20 a.m. today, a sedan traveling west on I-495 ran off the left side of the interstate and struck the Jersey wall, police said. The sedan then came back into the westbound lanes and collided with an RV. After that crash, the driver of the sedan exited his vehicle and was struck moments later by oncoming traffic. The adult male died at the scene.

State police are still in the process of notifying the decedent’s next of kin. No information about the vehicle or vehicles that struck the victim was available.

No one in the RV was injured in the crash.
