Fairfax County police are searching for a man who barricaded himself inside an Alexandria motel for a time Saturday and then slipped away into the night.

Officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant on Alton Thodos, 32, who was in a room in the Virginia Lodge motel on Richmond Highway. When they tried to enter the room police say Thodos made threats to harm himself. A woman who was in the room with Thodos came out, giving officers a chance to get in. But before they could do that Thodos went through the ceiling into the attic.

Police used tear gas to force Thodos to come out but he had already left the attic in another part of the building. Security camera video shows him escaping before officers could secure the area around the motel.

Thodos is wanted for active warrants on grand larceny, credit card theft, credit card fraud and a probation violation. He is described as 6’1”, 175 pounds, with a beard, wearing a red hat and a white shirt. Thodos may be driving a silver 2013 BMW X1 with Virginia tags UZE-8869.
