A one-car accident along I-95 in Stafford County left a driver and her dog dead Saturday night.

Virginia State Police say Katie M. Mason, 28, was driving her 2007 Toyota Camry south on I-95 when she ran off the road and struck the guardrail.

Both she and her dog survived the crash, but the dog jumped out of the car and ran into traffic, Ms. Mason ran after it and both were struck and killed by a 2012 Honda Civic.

Trooper K.D. Comer said the Civic was unable to avoid striking Mason and her dog. Both died at the scene.

In a Facebook listing, Katie Mason is identified as a former Army combat medic and Virginia Commonwealth University student. One photo shows her holding a black pug.
