Virginia State Police say a  Quantico town council member and Defense Department official was killed yesterday on I-95 when a Honda sedan changed lanes and struck the motorcycle.

Jerre S. Thomas II, 57, tried to regain control after the collision but his motorcycle left the pavement, then re-entered the left lane and fell onto its right side. Thomas was taken to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Thomas had been campaigning for a re-election to the Quantico Town Council. Ironically, on his Facebook page Thomas had commented on a recent incident in which a Florida driver allegedly ran a motorcyclist off the road during a road rage incident.

Thomas, a Marine Corps veteran, was the chief of the Visual Information Branch of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The accident happened about 8:15 am. Thursday in the left-hand northbound lane of I-95 near mile marker 151. The sedan driver — a 47-year-old male — was uninjured.

Police are consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney regarding charges. The crash remains under investigation.
