Volunteer charged with stealing from Alexandria church

A 53-year-old Annandale woman who volunteered to count her church’s weekly collection is accused of stealing from it.

Sandra Iree Cortes has been arrested and charged with three counts of grand larceny.

Fairfax County detectives set up a surveillance operation at the Queen of Apostles Church at 4329 Sano Street after a church employee told them a volunteer was suspected of stealing cash while counting it. Investigators say they saw Cortes doing that and arrested her.
