Fairfax County police say a medical emergency may have led to a fatal car crash on Leesburg Pike at the start of Monday morning’s rush hour.

A 2014 Kia Optima was traveling east on Leesburg Pike near the Dulles Toll Road around 6:15 a.m. when it crossed over the median and into the westbound lanes before hitting a guardrail.

The driver, 75-year-old Shirley Lee Corum, of Sterling, was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. Crash reconstruction detectives say it appears Corum suffered some sort of medical problem before losing control of her car.
