A Virginia State Police trooper is recovering after his vehicle was struck by an out-of-control SUV in Prince William County. The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. Tuesday along the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the 152 mile marker.
Trooper I.J. Dallam Sr., was parked off the left side of Interstate 95 (where the former HOV lanes used to merge into southbound I-95) and running stationary radar on southbound traffic. A 2000 Ford Explorer was traveling at an excessive rate of speed in the southbound lanes of I-95 when the driver lost control, a VSP spokeswoman said. The SUV overturned, slid off the left side of the interstate and crashed into Trooper Dallam’s marked patrol car.
Dallam was transported to Sentara Prince William Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries. He has since been treated and released.
The driver of the SUV, Corey A. Saenz, 23, of Quantico, Va., suffered a minor injury, but refused medical treatment. Saenz has been charged with reckless driving.
The crash remains under investigation.
