An electrical defect is being blamed for a fire that caused about $100,000 damage to a home in the Franconia area, at 5412 Hopark Drive, early this morning.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire on the roof of the two-story home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. Sounding smoke alarms provided early warning for the lone occupant; however, a dog perished in the fire. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupant. There were no injuries.

According to fire investigators, the cause of the fire was accidental. An electrical anomaly in the electrical power feed into the home caused the fire.
