Online Voter Registration Now Available

vote-flag-logoRegistering to vote or updating voter registration information is now more convenient for Fairfax County residents. The Virginia State Board of Elections launched an online voter registration service this week at The service streamlines the process and creates more accurate registration records, which is expected to reduce problems and lines on Election Day.

In order to complete the online application process, you will need your:

  • Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) customer identifier number, which is displayed on your DMV-issued identification card or driver’s license (at the top of your card).
  • Social Security Number
  • Birth date

Fairfax County residents who do not have a Virginia DMV customer number or other required information may still fill out the registration application online, but will be required to print, sign and return the completed application to the Office of Elections, P.O. Box 10161, Fairfax, VA 22038. You may also bring it in-person to the Office of Elections, Suite 323, Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035-0081.

All Fairfax County voter registration application submissions are still subject to review and approval by the general registrar. When the application or update is approved, you will be mailed a new or updated voter registration card.

“We encourage everyone who can to register to vote online,” said Fairfax County General Registrar Cameron Quinn. “In addition to the convenience to our residents, it also will make a significant difference in the accuracy of our voter records. It can be a challenge to read and interpret handwriting on the paper ballots. I expect this new online service to improve the voter experience both when registering and on Election Day.”

The Virginia General Election is Nov. 5 and will include elections for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, Fairfax County sheriff and the House of Delegates. The deadline to register for the Nov. 5 election is Oct. 15.
