Here are some people and events making news at your Fairfax County Public Schools:
- Edison Academy Culinary Arts program’s dining facility, will reopen in its newly renovated space in the Edison High building on Thursday, January 10, at 11:45 a.m. The Bistro is open for lunch every Thursday as Culinary Arts students, under the direction of Chef Glenn Walden, prepare and serve a three-course meal with beverage as part of their training. The public is welcome to make reservations to dine at Bistro 1093 and donations are being solicited (minimum $8) to cover the cost of the meal. Take-out service is also available. To be added to the Bistro 1093 mailing list for updates on upcoming menu and take-out specialties, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. In the event of a two-hour delay or closing on a Thursday, the Bistro will not open for lunch.
- Each Wednesday, first and second grade students at Deer Park Elementary participate in high frequency word work, a word study game, and a read-aloud component with an adult volunteer from American Systems as part of the S.T.A.R. (Students Thinking and Reading) program. The volunteers work with the students to explore new books and participate in re-reading exercises to help develop reading skills. American Systems, which has a formal business partnership with the school, makes a generous donation each year for new materials for the S.T.A.R. program. Now in its 12th year, the program was initiated at the request of American Systems, which was looking for a way to have hands-on involvement in a school-based reading program.
