Bicyclist Killed in Barcroft-Area Accident

Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist in the Barcroft area Monday. The accident occurred near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Ashwood Place around 2:07 p.m.

Police said a 72-year-old man was operating a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck westbound on Columbia Pike. A 58-year-old woman on a bicycle was attempting to cross Columbia Pike from north to south. As she crossed over the westbound lanes, she was struck by the truck and thrown over the hood and roof.

Elizabeth P. Shattuck, of 3216 Patrick Henry Drive in Falls Church, was pronounced dead at the scene. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors. There is not a crosswalk at the intersection.
