A second round of Metrobus improvements will take effect Sept. 30 — part of Metro’s $5 million outlay to improve bus service this year. The changes aim to improve on-time performance and reliability while reducing crowding for customers.

The “better bus” initiative represents what Metro calls “the biggest investment in bus service in five years” and will include more limited-stop MetroExtra routes and refinements to 11 existing priority corridors. More than 150,000 customers — roughly one third of all bus customers — are expected to benefit from more frequent service, additional capacity, or expanded hours of operation on selected routes.

Bus changes that will affect Virginia — effective Sept. 30 — include:

Wilson Boulevard Line, Route 1A

  • A new weekday westbound trip will be added leaving Seven Corners Transit Center at 5:51 a.m. to Vienna station.

Washington Boulevard Line, Routes 2B,G

  • The routing at Vienna station will be changed due to the availability of Vaden Drive between Lee Highway and Saintsbury Drive (Vienna station access road), and to eliminate backtracking via the intersection of Lee Highway and Nutley Street. Westbound trips will operate the current route to the Vienna station south side bus terminal, then continue west on Saintsbury Drive, left Vaden Drive, right Lee Highway and continue present routes to Fair Oaks Mall. Eastbound trips will operate the current route to Lee Highway and Vaden Drive, then left Vaden Drive, right Saintsbury Drive to Vienna station terminal, then continue east on Saintsbury Drive, right Nutley Street, left Lee Highway and continue present route to Ballston-MU station. This change discontinues 2B,G service and one westbound stop on Lee Highway between Nutley Street and Vaden Drive. Weekday and Saturday trip times between Vienna station and Fair Oaks Mall will be adjusted as a result of the new routing.

Huntington-Pentagon Line, Route 9E

  • Weekday running times between Pentagon and Rosslyn stations will be adjusted to reflect current traffic conditions.

Columbia Pike-Federal Triangle Line, Route 16F

  • Service will be redesignated as MetroExtra and converted to a headway-based operation in order to improve on-time performance and reliability.

Columbia Heights West-Pentagon City Line, Routes 16G,H

  • Weekday eastbound trip times passing Columbia Pike and Four Mile Run Drive between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. will be adjusted by one to three minutes to provide a common headway of every two to three minutes with other Route 16 service along Columbia Pike.
