Cucumbers Spilled in Morning Crash

A four-vehicle accident snarled traffic in I-495 during the height of the morning rush but police said only two people were injured.

The accident occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-495 just west of Exit 173/Van Dorn. A Ford Fusion was traveling west on I-495 when it changed lanes and collided with a box truck carrying tree-trimming equipment.

The tree-trimming truck lost control and struck a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then ran off the left side of the road and struck the Jersey wall. The impact with the wall forced the tractor-trailer back into the roadway where it struck an SUV and then overturned.

As the trailer of the tractor-trailer overturned, it ruptured and spilled cucumbers across the westbound lanes of I-495. By 8:33 a.m., one right lane was open to westbound traffic.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital. There were three children in the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash – none was injured.

The male driver of the Ford Fusion suffered serious, but not life threatening, injuries and was also transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital. The driver, Ammar A. Alshakarchi, 26, of Alexandria, has been charged with making an improper lane change.

None of the six riding in the tree-trimming truck was injured; nor was the driver of the SUV.
