For the eleventh consecutive year, the Town of Vienna has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to urban forestry.  The award was presented to the Town by Terry Lasher of the Virginia Department of Forestry at the Town’s annual Arbor Day tree planting ceremony at the Vienna Community Center today.

Four standards must be met to become a Tree City USA community: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. Information can be found at

In conjunction with the tree planting ceremony, a ground-breaking ceremony was held for the new Community/Educational Garden.

The garden, sponsored by the Town of Vienna and Vienna Elementary School and supported by Maple Avenue Market and Whole Foods Vienna, will consist of an educational element for Vienna Elementary School students and a community garden for the Town of Vienna.  For information on the Community/Educational Garden, contact Cathy Salgado at (703) 255-6356 or
