Here’s a rundown of people and events making news at your Fairfax County Public Schools.

Annandale High English teacher Melinda Bloomquist says Concert Band earned a gold rating from all three adjudicators at the Southern Star Music Festival held recently in Atlanta.  The band was also named the Sweepstakes winner after earning the highest overall score in the instrumental category.

South Lakes High’s Latina Danza company won the top prize at the annual Dominion High Latin Dance competition, which included competitors from the Washington metropolitan area.  The South Lakes students were recognized for creativity, degree of difficulty, and showmanship.  Students Dayana Raudales and Mike Hepfinger performed a dramatic and difficult tango routine; Hepfinger partnered with Amanda Torres in the samba competition.  Latina Danza competed in Tango couples, Samba couples, and large group categories.  The group is directed by Terlene Terry-Todd.

Amy Ahn, a student at Lanier Middle, won first place among middle school students in the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Northeastern Regional Art Contest.  The contest, first held in 1989, promotes the artistic talents of Virginia’s public school students.  A winner is chosen for each of the nine VSBA regions — for the elementary, middle and high school levels. Winning art is displayed in the VSBA offices in Charlottesville and the Richmond offices of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Oakton High student Marina Fondin attended the Virginia High School League State Forensics competition, held recently in Harrisonburg. She placed eighth in the state in her category — Humorous Interpretation of Literature.

Emi Eiting, choral director at Stuart High, was awarded the 2012 Colleen Kirk Award by the southern division of the American Choral Directors Association.  The award is presented to new and aspiring choral conductors who exemplify the ideals and standards represented by Kirk during her career.  It supports the attendance of the winner at division and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association.
