Park Programs Make Holiday Shopping Fun for Kids

Two Fairfax County Park Authority sites are offering special holiday shopping programs for children in December.

Programs at Frying Pan Farm Park and Colvin Run Historic Site are designed to make holiday shopping a fun and memorable experience. Kids will also gain an appreciation for the value of money as they try to stretch their pennies to fill their families’ stockings.

Frying Pan Farm Park

Volunteers at the Country Store help children shop for everybody on their holiday list from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4, 2011. The Country Store stocks many unique items in all price ranges, and free wrapping assures surprises for family and friends. Toys and books with a farm or outdoor theme are always available. Kids’ items include trucks, stuffed animals, puzzles and gardening and birdhouse kits. Books about the farm and the Civil War are also available, along with gardening supplies and souvenirs. Adults are invited to wait at the schoolhouse. Inclement weather dates are December 10 and 11.

Frying Pan Farm Park is located at 2709 West Ox Road in Herndon, Va. For more information, call 703-437-9101

Colvin Run Mill

The General Store at Colvin Run Mill Historic Site will open its doors to young shoppers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 4. Volunteers and staff will help children find the perfect gifts for everyone on their lists. Gift-wrapping is free. A special day for older children to shop for and wrap their own gifts is set for Monday, December 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. Groups of six or more should call ahead.

Colvin Run’s General Store is stocked with shelf after shelf of interesting items. Cookbooks paired with whole wheat flour, cornmeal and grits ground at the mill are culinary must-haves for anyone who likes to cook. Limited edition prints featuring the mill make exceptional gifts. Old-fashioned toys, books and stuffed animals are always a hit with children. Hand soaps and creams, travel mugs, teacups, jewelry, watches and holiday ornaments are popular gifts. Pocket naturalist guides, local history books and biking and hiking books offer inspiration for outdoor and history enthusiasts.

Colvin Run Mill Historic Site is located at 10017 Colvin Run Road in Great Falls, Va. For information, call 703-759-2771.
