First Rain, Then Snow, then ICE!

Winter’s gloom departed overnight but left icy streets and sidewalks behind.  Arlington County reported that N. George Mason Drive was closed in both directions over I-66 due to ice.

Saturday’s early blast of winter was not as severe in Fairfax as along much of the East Coast.  New York and points north received more snow and widespread power outages were reported.

Traffic was relatively light in much of the area yesterday as residents apparently decided to stay home rather than face the wintry conditions and slippery road.  In the VDOT traffic camera image, light traffic moves smoothly along I-95 at Backlick Road.

Although there was little accumulation of snow Saturday, ice was building up on tree branches, possibly foretelling power failures to come as branches still holding their leaves are burdened with ice and snow.
