George Mason Universityâ€™s School of Music is pleased to join Masonâ€™s Friends of Music and Steinway Piano Gallery of Washington, D.C. in presenting â€œA Grand Piano Celebrationâ€ on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011 in honor of Linda Apple Monson, International Steinway Artist and the School of Musicâ€™s associate director for academic affairs and director of keyboard studies.
This event marks the launch of the Dr. Linda Apple Monson Music Endowment Fund, which honors the extraordinary commitment and impact that Monson has had on the students, faculty and friends of Masonâ€™s School of Music for the past 12 years. The fund will support student scholarships and other related programs in the School of Music and was established by an anonymous donor who will contribute $100,000 to be matched by an additional $100,000 from private sources.
â€œI am deeply honored by the establishment of this endowment fund, which will provide needed scholarship support for our wonderful students in our School of Music,â€ Monson said. â€œTo everyone who has contributed to this fund, I offer my heartfelt thanks and profound gratitude. Your gifts will have a permanent impact on the lives of our Mason music students and community.â€
Monson has been a professor in Masonâ€™s School of Music since 1999. In addition, she serves as director of music at Springfield United Methodist Church. An honored recipient of the George Mason University 2009 Teaching Excellence Award, Monson has been selected for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Roster, in collaboration with the U.S. State Department and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. An active performer/scholar, she has given lecture-recitals, solo piano recitals and piano master classes in the United States, Europe, Asia and Central America. Monson earned bachelorâ€™s, masterâ€™s and doctorate degrees in music from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a diploma in piano from Musica en Compostela, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
The lead gift for the endowment challenge was made by Steinway Piano Gallery of Washington, D.C.
In 2007, George Mason University received the distinct honor of being named an All-Steinway School. Through the private support of individual donors and matching funds from the university, the School of Music was able to purchase 16 new Steinway grand pianos for its practice rooms and teaching studios. Rapidly expanding facilities for music students over the past several years have led to the School of Music acquiring additional Steinway pianos.
The events of â€œA Grand Piano Celebrationâ€ are as follows:
- An elegant lunch at 1 p.m. in the Instrumental Rehearsal Hall in the deLaski Performing Arts Building. Following the lunch, virtuoso pianist and International Steinway Artist Jeffrey Siegel and several of Monsonâ€™s students in the School of Music will provide piano selections.
- A â€œGrand Piano Concertâ€ at 3 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The program will feature International Steinway Artist Linda Apple Monson performing solo works, as well as works with other members of Masonâ€™s School of Music faculty. Her program includes solo piano works by Maurice Ravel; duo-piano works by Aram Khachaturian with her colleague, pianist Anna Balakerskaia; works by Schubert with four-time Grammy-winning tenor John Aler; and collaborative piano with internationally renowned jazz trombonist Harry Watters in a new work by Don Bowyer. The program will also feature a piano ensemble work showcasing Masonâ€™s stellar piano faculty: Linda Apple Monson, Anna Balakerskaia, Kelly Ker-Hackleman, John Paul Healey and Joanne Haroutounian. In addition, the program will showcase several exceptionally talented student pianists in Masonâ€™s School of Music who are recipients of scholarship support. They will perform works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy and Lutoslawski.
- A post-concert reception with the student and faculty artists at 5 p.m. on the Centerâ€™s Grand Tier III.
