Weekend Work Scheduled On I-495 and I-95/395

As the spring break travel season kicks off this weekend, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) wants to make sure motorists know how the various construction projects are likely to affect their travel.

First and foremost, VDOT strongly urges motorists to avoid I-495 south at I-66 due to the overnight one-hour long stoppages scheduled for after midnight on Friday night, April 15 and Saturday night, April 16.

These, then, are the areas you should know about:

  • I-495 south at I-66: On Friday night, April 15 and Saturday night, April 16, starting at 9:30 p.m., crews will close three lanes of I-495 south at I-66. Motorists traveling on I-495 south in the Tysons Corner and I-66 areas should plan for overnight stoppages of up to one hour at a time after midnight. VDOT urges motorists familiar with the area to use alternate routes. All lanes will reopen on Saturday by 8 a.m. and on Sunday by 9 a.m.
  • I-495 north at Arlington Boulevard (Route 50): On Friday night, April 15 and Saturday night, April 16, starting at 9:30 p.m. one lane will close on I-495 north at Route 50, progressing to a full I-495 north closure after 11 p.m.  Motorists will be directed to the exit ramp lanes over Route 50.  All lanes will reopen on Saturday by 7 a.m. and on Sunday by 9 a.m. This closure allows crews to pour a new concrete bridge deck.
  • I-95/395 HOV Lanes: Beginning on Friday night, April 15 from midnight until 3 a.m. on Monday, April 18, the HOV lanes will close from Washington D.C. to Dumfries (Route 234). Motorists will be directed to use the regular I-95/395 lanes. On Saturday night, April 16, at 5 p.m., the HOV lanes will reopen northbound from Edsall Road to Washington, D.C.  All HOV lanes will reopen by 3 a.m. Monday morning. This closure allows crews to perform test bores and roadway inspections.
  • I-95 North: Beginning on Sunday night, April 17 at 10 p.m. until Thursday morning at 5 a.m., multiple lanes will be closed and one open each night on I-95 north from Exit 160, Gordon Blvd. (Route 123) to Exit 161, Richmond Hwy. (Route 1) for sign erection. After midnight each night, all lanes on I-95 north will close intermittently for up to 30 minutes at a time
