Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting In Springfield Area

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the Springfield area at around 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Officers were initially called to the Virginia Tire and Auto store at 6626 Backlick Road, for a reported stabbing. One officer located a man in the 6500 block of Amherst Avenue who matched the description of the stabbing suspect.

When the officer challenged the man, he reportedly produced a weapon and moved toward the officer. The officer shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.  The dead man has been identified as Joseph Anthony Craft, 49, of 7031 Calamo Street in Springfield.

The stabbing victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The officer, a 15-year-veteran of the police department, was not injured. He’s been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
