County Students Earn Virginia FBLA Awards, Win State Office

Nine Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students won first place awards, and 89 students finished in the top five in their respective categories at the Virginia Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership competition held last weekend in Reston.

One hundred and eighty-nine Business and Information Technology students from FCPS competed in 59 different categories at the conference.

Fairfax County students received nine first place awards, 12 second place awards, 15 third place awards, 10 fourth place awards, and four fifth place awards. Students who earned a first or second place award will represent Virginia at the National FBLA Conference in Orlando in June.

Officer elections

Four students were elected to state office and will serve on the 2011-12 Virginia FBLA Board:

  • Akif Shameem of Robinson Secondary School was elected state president;
  • Graham Rockwood of Robinson Secondary School was elected corresponding secretary;
  • Rukshar Chughtai of Lee High School was elected secretary-treasurer; and
  • Priya Khanna of Westfield High School was elected reporter.

Meron Gosaye of Mount Vernon High School was elected to the position of vice president for the Northern Virginia region.

The Robinson Secondary School FBLA chapter was the third place finisher in the outstanding chapter competition. Chapters at Annandale High School, Chantilly High School, Herndon High School, Mount Vernon High School, and Robinson Secondary School were named honor chapters.
