Plans to toll I-66? Not so fast, say four NoVa Congressmen

There is rising opposition from Fairfax County residents to plans to add toll lanes and tighten HOV restrictions on I-66 outside the Beltway, as well as a growing feeling that Fairfax lives and property are somehow worth less than those in Arlington, which has choked off all but the merest trickle of traffic since I-66 opened. Today, four Northern Virginia congressmen warned Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne not to move too fast with the controversial plans, saying they are deeply […]

Fairfax March home sales spike on pent-up demand from long cold winter

Northern Virginia home sales spiked 14 percent in March, setting the stage for what many hope will be a vibrant spring selling season. But the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors notes that the sales spike may be partly due to the unusually cold winter. “The 14 percent increase in home sales this past March is a trend to celebrate, however we must remember that the 2014 winter polar vortex cast a huge chill on early 2014 home sales,” said Mary Bayat, the […]

Listen — new Fairfax County noise ordinance in the works

It’s been awhile since Fairfax County had a comprehensive noise ordinance, but that may not be the case much longer. The Board of Supervisors has a proposed new ordinance that will be open for public comment at a hearing tentatively set for May 12. The new rules cover everything from lawn mowers, barking dogs, loudspeakers at athletic fields, and industrial operations. Supervisors say they tried to balance the need to get things done with residents’ quality of life, limiting certain noises to […]

Op-Ed: Never let a good crisis go to waste

By Sharon Bulova Chairman, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors One of my favorite inspirational sayings comes from Winston Churchill: “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” I believe that when faced with a crisis, we must look for opportunities to make things better. This is advice I’ve been following since the Great Recession roiled the nation in 2008, followed by a sluggish recovery that has stalled over the Washington Metropolitan Region like a stubborn storm system. From December 2012 […]
