Sheriff’s Office Takes Homeless Kids Shopping for Clothing and School Supplies
Next Wednesday (August 29), about a week before school starts, the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office will treat 25 homeless kids to a shopping spree for clothing and school supplies.
For 19 years, the Shop with the Sheriff program has partnered with Target to help needy children get ready for the upcoming school year. The children currently reside in the Katherine K. Hanley and Patrick Henry Family Shelters. Each child will be paired with a Sheriff’s deputy and given a $325 certificate to use toward his or her purchase.
“Spending the day with these kids who are homeless really puts our own problems in perspective,” said Sheriff Stan Barry. “Plus we have a blast every year shopping with them.”
Since 1992, the Burke Target has been the primary sponsor of Shop with a Sheriff. Several local businesses have joined in sponsoring this worthwhile event. Montessori of Chantilly and Liberty Mutual – Alexandria made generous cash donations and Panera will provide breakfast to the staff and kids before they go on their back-to-school shopping spree.
