School Notes
Here are some events making news at your Fairfax County Public Schools.
- Summer school students at Hutchison Elementary will hold the Hutchison Olympics and Homeless Walk on Wednesday, August 1, beginning at 9 a.m. Ten classes of students have been studying the Olympics during the summer session and will be participating in Olympic-style events. Events will be tailored to each age group and will include events that require accuracy rather than athletic ability. The discus throw will include Frisbee-style discs thrown through hula hoops; accuracy will be more important than distance. Students will create their own javelins from straws and clay that will be thrown at a target for points, not distance. Closing ceremonies will include the story of someone who was once homeless, followed by a walk for the homeless.
- The Robinson Secondary Singers and the Robinson Select Women’s Ensemble earned silver medals in the champions competition at the 2012 World Choir Games held in July for the first time ever in the United States. This event, which spanned two weeks, included 364 choirs from countries across the world and took place in Cincinnati. During the games, the Select Women’s Ensemble performed with a girls’ choir from the Czech Republic as part of a demonstration concert. Choir director Mike Horanski challenged the vocal musicians to set long-term goals, which included competing in the more challenging champions competition instead of the open competition.
