UPDATE: Police Identify Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Springfield Area
Police have identified the man killed in an an officer-involved shooting Saturday (May 19) night as Gray Alan Combs, Jr., 22, of no fixed address. Officers were called to the apartment in the 5700 block of Backlick Road around 11:08 PM for a report of a wanted person hiding in a bedroom.
Combs had seven outstanding warrants:
- Three felony counts of producing child pornography;
- Three felony counts of possessing or reproducing child pornography with the intent to distribute; and
- A misdemeanor warrant for consensual sexual intercourse with a minor.
Officers were familiar with Combs because they’d encountered him previously on Friday night, when he allegedly gave officers false identification and escaped after a brief foot chase. As a result, two additional warrants were issued for resisting arrest and identity theft.
While searching the residence, patrol officers and a K9 team encountered Combs, who allegedly threatened them with a sword and refused to comply with their commands. The officers fired both less-lethal beanbag rounds and lethal rounds, striking Combs, who fell to the ground.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid and performed CPR. Combs was transported to the hospital and died a short time later.
One officer has been placed on routine administrative leave. The investigation is continuing.
