Frying Pan Farm Park Concludes Yearlong Anniversary
Frying Pan Farm Park will conclude its yearlong 50th anniversary celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday,
December, 3, with an old-fashioned holiday on the farm.
The 50th anniversary capstone event features a giveaway of five free turkeys during a gathering of farmers, friends, and officials at 1 p.m. Admission is free, while some activities require a fee.
Residents from Fairfax County and beyond have enjoyed Frying Pan Farm Park’s unique attractions for the past five decades, since the Fairfax County Park Authority purchased the farm. The preserved Depression-era farm in Herndon, Va., interprets the county’s agricultural past and the farm’s long history as a part of the Frying Pan community now known as Floris.
Activities
Visitors to the park on December 3 will be serenaded by strolling carolers as they warm themselves by fires and listen to storytellers. The decorated farmhouse will be open for tours. The toasty warm blacksmith’s shop will be a popular place as the blacksmith hammers hot iron on his anvil. Frying Pan’s local beekeeper will open the farm’s hives and demonstrate honey-harvesting techniques.
A celebration at the farm wouldn’t be complete without opportunities to interact with animals. Children will enjoy seeing farm animals up close inside Kidwell Farm. Equestrian fans will enjoy the English and Western-style horseback demonstrations. And pony rides will be available for $5. Canine connoisseurs will enjoy watching dog agility trials.
Santa Claus and his sleigh will be available in the barn for photos.
A special children’s holiday shopping event will take place in the Country Store from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Staff and volunteers help children shop and wrap presents for family and friends. Items available of purchase include honey from the farm’s apiary and gifts for farm, gardening, and history enthusiasts. The shopping program requires pre-registration.
